Overview

Salkantay Trekking in 4 Days

It is an old and remote alternative to the Inca Trail, has much more spectacular views and with various ecological floors walk between lagoons, impressive snow-capped mountains such as “Salkantay and Humantay”, crossing rivers and subtropical areas of abundant vegetation and fauna. This trail is an excellent option for those who wish to escape from the more congested and faster routes, or for those who are looking for an alternative when the spaces of the traditional Inca Trail are occupied.

This impressive excursion passes under the magnificent “Salkantay” mountain (6,710 m / 22,014 ft), one of the highest and most impressive in the Peruvian Andes. Your first two days will be dominated by the impressive snow-capped peaks of “Salkantay and Humantay”, as you walk through the high Andean landscape. On the third day you will descend into the warm cloud forest, to reach “Machu Picchu pueblo” on the fourth day. The impressive sacred citadel of the Incas Machu Picchu is visited on the last day of the program. This excursion is an interesting alternative for those who have not found space on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu route. The “Salkantay” excursion was recently named by National Geographic Adventure Travel magazine as one of the top 25 excursions in the world.

Recommendation.

It is necessary to acclimatize in Cusco, two days before starting the tour. For a good acclimatization it is necessary to rest as much as possible, to eat little, to drink abundant liquid; specially the mate of coca that possesses known healing and digestive properties. Adequate acclimatization avoids that it affects the “soroche” or altitude sickness, that could cause numerous annoyances to the health.
