Waqrapucara 2 Days Tour
In our two day tour to the Waqrapucara Fortress we will take you to one of the ancient Inca temples located in the Andes Mountains in Cusco, built on top of steeper mountains; this hike is very different from the others, as it is not usually visited by many tourists because it is an attraction that is recently being promoted this experience.
However, the destination is gaining attention as a hidden treasure for travelers seeking an alternative hiking and camping adventure.
In fact, it has just made the front page of one of Peru’s most important newspapers, La República.
Located in the province of Acomayo, in the district of Pomacanchi in Cusco, the name Waqrapukara means “horn-shaped fortress”.
Getting there involves a journey of 2½ hours by car from Cusco to the town of Santa Lucia, and then a 2 hour hike.
Similar to Machu Picchu, the Inca ceremonial architecture in Waqrapukara combines amazing stone masonry and spectacular natural formations.
Located sinuously along a rocky outcrop, built around two horn-shaped mountain peaks, the site has eight Inca terraces with retaining walls and stone staircases.

Description
This tour has a great additional for people seeking to know Cusco and its spirituality, and contact with Mother Nature, The Archaeological site of Waqrapukara that is built at an altitude of 4,140 meters, is still a novelty for tourists.
We’ll make a camp near this magical place. We will enjoy the night sky bathed in beautiful stars and constellations, which by the fact of being far from the brightness of the cities we will be able to enjoy in all its fullness.
Its name comes from the Quechua “Waqra” = horn, “pukara” fortress. Which translated into Spanish means “fortress with horns” because of its particular shape. However, its original name would have been “Llamapukara”, since the locals claim that they would not be horns, but the ears of a flame.
This fortress was built by the “Qanchis” (Pre-Incan culture) in the period “Auqaruna” 1,500 BC – 1,000 BC. At this time it was known as “Llaqta Pukara”, which would have been an astronomical observatory and a Sanctuary that was dedicated to the god “Teqci Pachakamaq Wiraqocha” (God creator of all things).
And that later it was conquered by the Incas who molded their constructions according to the characteristic geography of the place, during the government of the Inca Wayna Qhapac. It became a first-rate Inca sanctuary representing the immense political and religious power. In the year2017, it was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation by the Ministry of Culture.
This archaeological site is made up of 2 large groups of buildings. The first group is located in the upper part where you can see 2 groups with enclosures, separated by a large central space, with passageways, portals and niches of ornamental and functional character. From this place we will be able to appreciate a spectacular view of the Apurímac river and the Andes of Cusco.
We will also participate in a ceremony to the Pachamama (payment to the land). We will also have the opportunity to appreciate cave paintings with illustrations of llamas. In addition, you can visit the house of Carmen Noguera mother of Tupac Amaru (leader of the largest indigenous and independence movement against the Spanish crown in the eighteenth century).
