Cusco, Peru: The Heart of the Inca Empire

Located in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru, Cusco is a city steeped in rich cultural and historical heritage. This former capital of the Inca Empire is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in South America, attracting visitors from all over the world. Whether you are an avid hiker, a history buff, or simply looking for an adventure, Cusco has something to offer everyone.

Here are some of the top things to see and do in Cusco, along with some recommendations and tips to help you plan your trip.

  1. Explore the city’s rich history: Cusco is home to some of the most well-preserved Inca ruins in the world, including the famous Temple of the Sun (Qoricancha) and the massive fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Take a guided tour to learn about the history and significance of these sites, and to explore the narrow, cobblestone streets of the city’s historic center.
  2. Take a trek to Machu Picchu: No trip to Cusco is complete without a visit to Machu Picchu, the famous “Lost City of the Incas.” There are several trekking options available, including the classic Inca Trail, the shorter 2-day trek, and the less strenuous train journey. Whichever option you choose, be sure to book in advance, as permits for the Inca Trail are limited.
  3. Visit the Sacred Valley: The Sacred Valley is a stunning region of rolling hills and terraced farmlands that stretches from Cusco to Machu Picchu. Here, you can visit historic Inca sites like Pisac and Ollantaytambo, shop for locally made textiles and crafts, and learn about traditional Andean culture and agriculture.
  4. Try local cuisine: Cusco is renowned for its delicious cuisine, which combines traditional Andean ingredients with Spanish and indigenous flavors. Be sure to try dishes like cuy (guinea pig), alpaca, and quinoa, as well as regional specialties like ají de gallina (chicken in a creamy chili sauce) and papas rellenas (stuffed potatoes).
  5. Physical preparation: Cusco is located at an altitude of 3,400 meters (11,150 feet), so it is important to be well-prepared for the physical demands of the trip. Give yourself time to acclimate to the altitude before attempting any strenuous activities, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

What to bring:

  • Comfortable, warm clothing: Cusco can be quite chilly, especially in the evenings, so be sure to pack plenty of layers.
  • Sturdy hiking boots: If you plan to take a trek to Machu Picchu, you will need a good pair of hiking boots to help you tackle the steep and rocky terrain.
  • Sunscreen and a hat: Cusco is located near the equator, so the sun can be quite intense.
  • A water bottle: Staying hydrated is important, especially at high altitude.
  • A camera: Cusco is one of the most photogenic cities in South America, so don’t forget to bring your camera!

Best time to visit:
