DAY 1

Uros and Amantani Itinerary

Our trip to Taquile Island by regular boat is 2 hours and 45 minutes, on the way we will visit the floating islands of the Uros. The same one that is currently considered the National Reserve of Lake Titicaca.

It is also known as the highest navigable lake in the world. After this we will make a brief visit to a minimum of two islands where the traditional way of life of the settlers, their customs and activities to which they devote themselves such as handicrafts and artisan fishing.

These islands are built on blocks of roots of totora with layers of dry totora placed vertically and horizontally, on this base are located their rooms made of the same material. Then we continue our journey to Taquile.

Taquile Island is located 37 km from the city of Puno, famous for its production of handicrafts (declared cultural heritage of humanity), and precisely for the manufacture of its beautiful textiles. In this Taquile Island the inhabitants practice moral principles of Inca origin such as “Ama Sua” (do not steal), “Ama Quella” (do not be idle) and “Ama Lulla” (do not lie) that are still used among the inhabitants. The island is about 1.5 km wide and 5.7 km long.

In colonial times the island of Taquile was a prison, now live approximately 2000 people, the people wear a very special hat for example referring to single or married and authorities, on this island you can live with tranquility, as it has a kindergarten, school for children in primary and secondary, in addition to a medical center and also have satellite phone. In addition to this we can also find areas that are not tourist but just as interesting, temples, tombs and terraces of the pre-Inca era (Pucará), their landscapes, traditional farming techniques and ancestral customs, and so on. This visit can be tiring, due to the 565 steps that must be given to go down towards the main port and by the altitude (13, 000 feet / 4,030 meters above sea level), a fairly interesting and exciting tour, but worth it; after this we will return to the city of Puno.
