Why Llamas: Llamas are a currently underutilized eco-friendly means of transporting gear and supplies in the high mountains. With the rise in tourism, vulnerable mountain ecosystems are at risk and require responsible management. That’s why we use native llamas, just as the ancient Incan cultures did.
In ancient times, llamas were critical to the Inca culture’s success and survival. Now we can use them to transport our supplies with minimal impact. Once you hit the trail, you’ll see first-hand the incredible strength of these animals and understand why people have been packing with them for centuries – it’s simply in their DNA. Their feet feature a leather pad similar to that of a dog, with a split toe that provides a larger surface area and superior grip. When it comes to rocky, steep, and challenging terrain, llamas excel where some pack animals may fall short. They are smaller than horses and therefore consume much less food and water, making them a more low-impact and eco-friendly choice.
