he most famous way to reach Machu Picchu is via the Inca Trail, arriving directly without taking the train and bus. You can only do the Inca Trail with a licensed operator due to regulations, and permits need to be booked well in advance.
Even mid-range operators offer porters to carry your bags, cook your meals, and set up your tents, but it’s still camping, and trail bathrooms are basic (except for luxury tours that bring their own toilets and showers).
If camping isn’t for you, there are two other options. Companies like Mountain Lodges of Peru and Andean Lodges offer fantastic lodge-to-lodge treks in the Cusco area, providing a comfortable bed and hot shower each night, but not arriving directly at Machu Picchu. Another option is a two-day Inca Trail trek, walking a portion of the trail on the first day and ending at Machu Picchu, then staying overnight in Aguas Calientes before visiting Machu Picchu the following day.
